What’s On… Industry Takeover Series: Introduction to Self-Employment with Hannah Mina

You’re making money from music. Are you actually set up to keep it? On Wed 2nd September, join us for a workshop where Hannah Mina strips self-employment back to what it actually means for artists, producers and creatives — no jargon, no scare tactics, just the stuff you need to know.

What we’ll cover

Income streams — the real ways creatives get paid: gigs and performance fees, session work, production and mixing, teaching and workshops, sync licensing, royalties, merch, brand deals, platform payouts (TikTok, Spotify) and grants.

Outgoings and expenses — what’s actually deductible: studio time, travel, subs, marketing, home office and more.

Getting paid properly — invoicing basics, setting payment terms, and what to do when someone’s late paying you.

Registering and filing — how to register as self-employed, the Self Assessment process demystified, and why the deadlines matter more than you think.

Making Tax Digital — what’s changing, who it affects and when, and where to go for the full detail.

Funding routes worth knowing about alongside your own income.

Why now

If you started earning from music or freelance work this tax year, the clock’s already moving: HMRC requires you to register as self-employed by 5 October following the end of the tax year you started earning in. Miss that — or miss a filing deadline — and the fines stack up fast. We’ve seen it happen in this community. This session exists so it doesn’t happen again. Whether you’re doing your own return or figuring out if it’s time to pay someone else to, you’ll leave knowing exactly where you stand and what to do next.

Who it’s for

Any artist, producer, or creative earning money outside a payslip — whether that’s your main income or your side income.
