BBC Radio 1 host and DJ Martha held a workshop on ‘how to create your own radio/podcast show’ at UD’s Talent House, as part of the Industry Takeover series. Most known for creating a space for underground electronic music, we saw Martha pass on words of wisdom to beginners on the scene looking to start their own shows…
Before her demonstration on the decks, Martha discussed key tips on interviewing skills, referencing a memorable interaction with Anthony Joshua. Given only 20 minutes to interview the well-known boxer, she highlights how “giving space” for his thoughts and experiences was incredibly important. She explained it allowed for a deeper dive into topics he may not have otherwise discussed had he not have opened up. Her professional experience provided helpful insight into the psychology behind live interviews.

key gems from Martha on podcasts:
“Come up with a signature question, something that you ask almost all your guests. Firstly, because it can be really nice to edit those together at the end of the year and show all of these different answers to the same question. But also, it builds a bit of a thing that your audience already recognises and it’s like a bit of a hook.”
Martha also draws attention to the importance of community radio stations; they gave her the first step into the industry and from treating it “as if it was national radio” she gathered more opportunities on a larger level that she was “ready” for because of her previous experience.

Moving onto a demonstration on the decks, participants got hands-on experience with introducing songs on their self-named shows. Martha guided them on how to use the equipment, allowing them to go home with their own mini recording of their own radio show/podcast hopefully giving them the courage to continue it. Participants detailed that they found the workshop “inspiring” and “informative” after being given a pilot session at UD for their individual shows.
