On the 2nd July, Flames Collective had the incredible honour of performing at a very special event: the installation ceremony and dinner for Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon (UD’s Chair), as she became the Chancellor of Glasgow CALEDONIAN University.
Our adventure started with an early train ride. There were eight of us heading to Glasgow and we were all buzzing with excitement. However, my journey wasn’t off to the best start as I battled severe travel sickness. I was violently throwing up throughout the four-hour ride. A shout out to the kind man who offered me some baby wipes – they were a lifesaver!
Once we arrived in Glasgow, everything was conveniently located. We took a short, ten-minute walk to our hotel and checked in. To our delight, the hotel welcomed us with a complimentary cookie upon arrival, which was a sweet touch after our exhausting trip.
After settling in, we gathered in Rashida’s room for a quick rehearsal. We wanted to ensure everything was perfect. The run-through helped ease some of our nerves and prepared us for the performances ahead.
The next morning, we woke up early, enjoyed a hearty breakfast, and got ready for the day. After another quick rehearsal, we headed to the venue for a sound check. Our first performance was at the graduation ceremony, where Dr. Anne Marie Imafidon was officially awarded the title of Chancellor of Glasgow University. It was an honour to perform at such a significant event, and the atmosphere was electric. Seeing Anne Marie take on this prestigious role was truly inspiring.
Later that evening, we performed again at the celebration dinner. This was a more relaxed setting, and the vibe was absolutely beautiful. We were surrounded by people who admired and respected Anne Marie, and it was clear she had touched many lives.
Being part of this event was a humbling experience. Anne Marie’s journey and accomplishments are truly inspiring, and it was a privilege to witness and contribute to this special moment. Despite the travel sickness, the experience was incredibly rewarding.
Performing at Anne Marie’s ceremony as she became the Chancellor of Glasgow University was a memorable journey. From the train ride filled with challenges to the honour of performing at such a prestigious event, every moment was special. Anne Marie’s story is a testament to hard work and dedication, and I am grateful to have been a part of this beautiful celebration.
