Sheffield MC and producer Coco speaks to UD about publishing and performance rights

Coco speaks to UD

Why ARE royalties and publishing rights so important for young artists?

Sheffield MC and producer Coco has been steadily championing the grime scene, with his unapologetic delivery, colourful character and undeniable energy earning plaudits from the likes of COMPLEX, DJ MAG, RED BULL, NOISEY, i-D and spins from ANNIE MAC, DJ TARGET, CHARLIE SLOTH and more. Fresh from performing at Stormzy’s Merky Fest in Ibiza and being the face of Sheffield United FC premiership kit launch, COCO is now promoting his EP ‘Regional Murker’.

Coco tells UD how he first learnt about publishing and performance rights.

‘I found out about performance rights through my publisher, Simon. He broke down how to earn publishing money, how publishers collect money on your behalf and what kind of deals they put in place for artists they want to work with.’

“It’s the difference between working a 9 to 5 or just doing the music full time. I was working up until 2016 but because of all the money I was getting from royalties, I was in a position where I could leave work and pursue my music career full time. It enables you to put more time into your music because you don’t have to worry about the other things to earn money. You’re doing it through your music.”
